What fabrics work best for jackets?

For lightweight outdoor jackets, 100–180 GSM is a good weight range to start with. Waterproof protection, breathability and windproof performance are the key features to look for.

Nylon and polyester wovens are common choices, including ripstop fabrics for designs where tear resistance matters. Stretch wovens are another option for jackets that need more freedom of movement.

Beyond these basics, consider the fabric’s handfeel, abrasion resistance and drape. Check whether it feels soft enough, holds the shape you want and works well with the intended lining.

For rain jackets, look for a suitable waterproof, breathable membrane or coating. A water-repellent finish helps water bead on the surface, but it won’t make the fabric waterproof on its own. The finished jacket also needs sealed seams to prevent water from entering through the stitching.

The final choice should suit the jacket’s intended use, season and target price.
