Why do jeans have a small pocket?

There is often a small pocket hidden next to the big pocket of jeans.
This traditional design was originally used to hold pocket watches.
It is called "table bag". Early jeans used it to store pocket watches separately, and the large pocket next to it could still hold other items.
Nowadays, we rarely carry pocket watches with us, but this small pocket is kept on many jeans.
